Couch 2 Ultra Chronicles of a Modern Caveman

Raw Paleo

High-Raw, Raw Octo-Vegetarian… whatever wets your whistle!

Summary from my 6 weeks as a vegan:

  1. Exercise recovery kicks ass.
  2. I figured my joints would be a mess without my O-3 from fish oil. NOT AT ALL the case.
  3. I ate a ton of nuts too.
  4. I took flax oil when I remembered.
  5. I got re-addicted to sugar.

What I learned:

  1. Dairy is hell on my joints. Yes the raw stuff!
  2. Vegan is hell on my guts.
  3. Raw vegan was worse, unless I live on mostly fruit.
  4. Vegan is expensive as hell! Grocery bill 3-4 times higher at least.
  5. Need to find a probiotic equivalent to raw milk kefir.

Here’s what I’m doing now

  1. 98% raw food.
  2. :) I LOVE me some raw eggs!
  3. Exceptions = some: CLO/fish oil, pasteurized coconut water, cold pressed oils (coconut & olive).
  4. Fermenting coconut water w/water kefir grains. Should be as good as dairy.
  5. Overall… keeping it low-ish fat (100-ish a day). Low for me anyway.
  6. Probably be eating like 60% of my calories as fruit.
  7. Might eat a few red/black beans fermented then cooked, just to keep things mixed up.

If I can keep my guts happy, I think this will be the cat’s pajamas in meeting all my needs in trimming up while still performing and feeling well.

Someone who is going to compete in an ironman competition no doubt needs more carbs. Great to hear you are still going to avoid grains and legumes though (for the most part).

My sisters are not on the primal bandwagon yet because they just do not like eating animals. One of my sisters love fish. I will have to try and get them to visit your site again as I think they will like what they see.

I really think this is going to work for me this time. On day two now. Been dropping in the coconut water kefir, Kombucha and a PB 8 probiotic and things are going great with the stomach. No doubt I’ll be shedding some poundage too while still remaining strong!

Update: Feeling great despite my HUGE work related stress load. Basically eating unmetered volume. Around 10-12lbs for dinner each night. Not getitng on the sacle, but I’m not getting fatter :)

99.5% raw. Little bit of vanilla, ground cinnamon, fishy sauce on my salads, hemp protein, and few tsp of CLO is all that hasn’t fit the raw mold. Not sure about the salad salsa. It’s mostly organic though.

    Vita-mix smoothie recipe:

        1-3 bananas
Handful nuts or some nut butter
        1t vanilla
        1T cinnamon
        10oz coconut water kefir
Scoop of hemp protein or more nuts.

    Fish oil = not vegetarian
    Dairy = not paleo

“Fish oil = not vegetarian” Depends on which vegetarian you talk to, but I agree.

“Dairy = not paleo” I’m aware, but it is primal.

I didn’t end up doing either.
