Yep that’s the technique to quickly end a wounded bird. He just had a broken wing is all. Same thing happens in the “Kill to Eat” video coming soon. The grouse’s skin is very thin, so the head comes off about every time unlike a duck etc… I don’t want anything to suffer (I really like & respect animals/nature) so I get the kill over with as fast as I can.

And yes, people think it’s so gross, mean, whatever…. What the people don’t understand is that up until a few hundred years ago (or less) to most everyone this was not a big deal at all and most probably knew how to, or had done it.

It’s a cheap point and shoot pocket digital camera. I use a big rock for a bipod and a little stick for the fine adjustments.

I slow cooked in a pot with a little bit of butter, dried onions, cumin and chili powder. Coated the bird with EVOO, then Italian seasonings and parsley, then with EVOO again. A hair dry, but I did cook it on the fast side.

Pa probably fed them to the neighbor dog

Also, I used to watch Pa twirl chickens around until their heads popped off. I’ve never seen one run without its head, though, but boy did they know how to kick (which now reminds me of my wife’s restless leg syndrome — which she no longer suffers since coming off of grains). Piles of headless chickens and a heavy aroma of salty metal in the air… this has always meant extended family and close friends were coming for dinner. I don’t remember what was done with the heads, but I think my Pa buried them behind the shed next to where he buried my little brother’s bunny.

Grouse are basically little wild chickens. Wimpy wings & can’t fly for crap.

Their defense is explosive/startling takeoffs when danger is very close.
