Chronicles of a Modern Caveman

Gathering… It’s Not So Easy!

Unripe Peaches

Grok doesn’t need to work out on hunting or gathering days. If you’ve never been on a several hour (3.5 in this case) gathering mission through the woods, well then you just wont understand! This was the first time I’ve broken a good sweat in quite a while. I’m not slouching either! I’ve been working out and running 1/2 marathons on a regular basis.

    @phareon,

    I’m sure homesteaders planted some of the originals trees, but there is no question the stuff is wild and organic. Just about takes a machete to get to a lot of it.

    There is one little swamp-ish area here where plum trees have completely taken over. They’re practically as thick as blackberry brush.

    Crazy, crazy stuff! Those blackberry’s blow my mind. I LOVE blackberry’s but can never justify spending the money on them.

    And that reminds me, I need a machete and a reason to use it.

    There is seriously an endless supply. Two versions. I like the boader leafed ones better. More tart & sweet at the same time with less seeds. We have the little mountain blackberries too, but they’re hader to find right here near the house. Lots more up on the mountain (St Helens).

    I just use a big green stick and more muscle most the time. It’s longer, free, and you can toss it in the brush when you’re done so you don’t have to carry it home :)
